Mid-Year Book Freakout 2021

Since we’ve reached the halfway point of this year I have decided to summarize my reading experiences by doing the mid-year book freakout 2021. I’m a fan of lot of Booktubers doing this tag. You will find the video of the Co-Creator down below.

Question 1: Best book you’ve read so far in 2021.

Definitly The Hero of Ages by Brandon Sanderson. I’ve finally decided to read the Cosmere and have finished the Mistborn Trilogy. This book was everything I had hoped for and more. Everyone saying that the ending is incredible is totally correct. My whole reading experience with this series was just so great. Vin as a main character goes through such an awesome journey throughout these books and quickly became one of my favorite characters.

Question 2: Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2021.

I will go with Heartstopper Vol. 4 by Alice Oseman. I really love the graphic novel series and just felt like this volume was incredibly heartbreaking while also giving you a new sense of hope. The series overall deals with so many important topics and the rep of characters is awesome. So excited for the next one.

Question 3: New release you haven’t read yet, but want to.

I don’t really know why I haven’t picked it up yet, since it is sitting on my shelf. But it is The Anthropocene Reviewed by John Green. I have been waiting for the release for such a long time and am definitely prioritizing this as one of my next reads. John Green is one of my favorite authors so I have high hopes.

Question 4: Most anticipated release for the second half of the year.

Aristotle and Dante Dive into the Waters of the World by Benjamin Alire Sáenz. The first Aristotle and Dante book is one of my all time favorites and I didn’t even know about the sequel coming out until a few weeks ago. I will for sure pick this one up.

Question 5: Biggest disappointment.

This sadly is pretty easy for me to answer since I had such high expectations. It is The Crown of Gilded Bones by Jennifer L. Armentrout. I really enjoyed the first two books in the series but this was sadly very disappointing. There was so much telling and almost no showing. The relationship almost seemed kind of boring now that the main characters are together. Overall it felt like the main plot of the series was switched around so many times that the author doesn’t even know where she wants to go with it. I think I will pick up the next one to see if the story gets better again but I’m still a little one the fence about it.

Question 6: Biggest surprise.

100% Hold Back the Tide by Melinda Salisbury. I just randomly picked this book up and could not put it down again. The characters, the plot and the overall creepy vibes were just so well done. I also really enjoyed the ending. You can find my review of the book a few posts back.

Question 7: Favourite new author. (Debut or new to you)

Brandon Sanderson. I don’t think I have to elaborate – he is just a master.

Question 8: Newest fictional crush.

Aidan from Ever After Always by Chloe Liese. He is the main character of the third book in the Bergman Brothers Series and just such a sweetheart. There is already an established relationship at the beginning of the story. Aidan is such a caring and funny husband. I really enjoyed their love story.

Question 9: Newest favourite character.

FitzChivalry from Robin Hobbs Farseer Trilogy. I don’t think I have ever felt so much for a fictional character but he is just incredible. By book three I was sure that I could read about Fitz looking at a wall and I would enjoy it. He is such a troubled but caring character and just overall a good person. Cannot wait to read more books about him.

Question 10: Book that made you cry.

Know My Name by Chanel Miller. This is such an important read and I would urge everyone to read it. The story is incredibly personal and sad but at the same time so uplifting. I am in awe of Chanel Miller and everything that she had to endure. I really hope she writes more in the future – her writing style is so so good.

Question 11: Book that made you happy.

Honestly a lot of books but I will go with Shipped by Angie Hockman. This was such a cute and fun summer book and really reminded me of the Unhoneymooners, which I read and enjoyed last year.

Question 12: Most beautiful book you’ve bought so far this year (or received)

The Wolf of Oren-Yaro by K.S. Villoso. Every book in this trilogy has an awesome cover. After a lot of recommendations I finally caved and bought them all. Now I only have to read them…

Question 13: What books do you need to read by the end of the year?

I really want to read more of Robin Hobbs Realm of the Elderlings books and Brandon Sandersons Cosmere books. I think those will take me a while but I am so excited since I have been enjoying all the books in those worlds that I have read so far.

G xoxo
